You need to hear Disclosure and Sam Smith cover Drake
Disclosure’s much-anticipated sophomore album Caracal is due out next Friday 25 September, so the Lawrence brothers are in promo overdrive right now. Earlier this week, that publicity tour included a visit to Radio 1’s Live Lounge with superstar collaborator Sam Smith to play their new tune Omen, as well as a surprise cover version of Drake’s current chart-stormer Hotline Bling.
Sam Smith and his back-up vocalists give the cover some scale-traversing raw emotion as the Lawrence brothers jam out on the keys and electronic drum kit; as The Fader pointed out, Disclosure and Smith are the latest in a run of artists to turn in a cover version of Hotline Bling, following on from vocalists like Alessia Cara, Charlie Puth, and Kehlani. Watch the live cover version below, or head to the BBC website to hear the full Live Lounge session.
Drake tracks can always be relied upon to produce interesting cover versions; 2013 mega-hit Hold On, We’re Going Home collected quality covers by everyone from Arctic Monkeys to nu-disco pioneers Holy Ghost. And while it’ll probably be a while before we get another local visit from the 6 God, the good news for Disclosure fans is that the Lawrence brothers are headed back our way this NYE period to play Falls and Southbound.
