WTF collabs: Skrillex & The Doors; Pretty Lights & Leann Rimes…
“The way the culture has been dominated here in the United States by rock ‘n roll, hip hop and country, never in my wildest dreams did I expect dance music to blow up like it has,” marvelled Miami resident Markus Schulz to inthemix last week. Well, it looks like all those worlds are about to meet in one documentary RE:GENERATION, which is being produced as a promotion for Grammy Week 2012. The tagline: “Five DJs turn the tables on the history of music”.
The film showcases some collaborations no one could rightly have expected, as you’ll see in the video below. Top of the list is Skrillex flexing his production chops alongside the remaining members of The Doors. “If I do say so myself, it sounds fucking great, hot as hell,” Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek enthused to Rolling Stone. “I like to say this is the first new Doors track of the 21st century.”
RE:GENERATION also features a hook-up between incoming Stereosonic visitor Pretty Lights will country warblers Leann Rimes and Ralph Stanley. From the looks of this trailer, ol’ Ralph gave Pretty Lights a bit of grief. Drama!
There’s a good chance something great will come out of Nas and DJ Premier’s studio time with the Berklee School of Music Orchestra, and The Crystal Method with Martha Reeves is an intriguing proposition. A jazz collaboration between Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty and members of the Dap Kings could actually be the most promising, though.
