The trailer for the “best electronic music film of our time” has finally landed

Last June we got our first glimpse at What We Started, the new doco that examines the three decades of dance music history through the diverging careers of techno legend Carl Cox and EDM upstart Martin Garrix.

It’s an ambitious endeavour, and the film is already picking up rave reviews following a preview screening at LA Film Festival last year, with Noctural Times labelling it the “best electronic music film of our time.”

The full-length trailer for the doco has now dropped, featuring snippets of interviews with dance veterans like Paul Oakenfold, Moby, Pete Tong, Tiësto — and of course Carl Cox and Martin Garrix. More interestingly, the clip demonstrates the tension that exists between some of dance’s veterans and the new guard of EDM stars.

“Why is a 17-year-old the fucking face of dance music? What the fuck?” Seth Troxler asks, while British legend Paul Oakenfeld has a similar outlook: “16/17-year-old kid makes a record. He has no experience ever of playing in front of a crowd…and they book him. Why?”

What We Started will officially premiere at Ultra Music Festival next month in Miami, and will land on Netflix in June. Watch the trailer below.
