Watch Tiesto’s very awkward Grammys acceptance speech
As rapidly as dance music has ascended over the last few years, when it comes to The Grammys, we’re still on the outer. Electronic music was honoured in three categories at this year’s event, but all the awards were handed out in the pre-telecast ceremony – along with those important Gospel, Bluegrass and Jazz prizes – while Beyonce and co were still walking the red carpet.
Which means that when Tiesto stepped up to accept his Best Remixed Recording gong (for his edit of John Legend’s All Of Me), he wasn’t exactly greeted by a roaring crowd. As you can see in the below video, when the superstar DJ took the stage, the audience – who have probably never heard the word “trouse” in their lives – didn’t have much to offer in the way of applause.
But while fans on his Facebook have pointed out the awkward moment (“the audience was dead ???”, one perplexed fan notes) Tijs took it in his stride. “I made this remix last year spontaneously to thank my fans,” he told the room.
“I gave it away as a free download without asking. [John Legend] liked it so much, so he said, ‘Let’s make it an official release,’ and that’s how this thing came together. And now I’m receiving a Grammy for it. It’s unbelievable. Anything is possible nowadays, you know?” Watch the speech below, and catch up with the full list of dance Grammy winners here.
