Watch: Red Bull Music Academy’s new doc goes beyond the beats
Back in January, the Red Bull Music Academy dropped a trailer for its documentary What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music, with the promise of a free digital release in February. The feature-length film made its online debut today, and it’s an hour and a half of must-see footage for any music fan or aspiring musician.
What Does Difference Does It Make? celebrates RMBA’s 15th anniversary by chronicling its 2013 New York City edition, capturing the conversations, concerts and events that made up the month-long haul. Along the way, director Ralf Schmerberg sits down with RBMA’s artists to ”[explore] the challenges that a life in music can bring.”
The diverse slate of artists includes Richie Hawtin, Giorgio Moroder, Flying Lotus, Seth Troxler, Just Blaze, James Murphy and Skream, among many others, and takes an honest look at how and why they create what they do. Schmerberg also captures the collaborative spirit of RBMA – for both its participants and their accomplished tutors – as well as the excitement the events brought to New York City last spring.
