Watch Porter Robinson’s inspiring keynote address at EMC 2014

Two weeks ago, the dance music world converged on Sydney for the third annual Electronic Music Conference (EMC), which kicked off on the morning of Tuesday December 3 with two inspiring keynote addresses by two titans of the scene: label don Steve Aoki and electronic auteur Porter Robinson. We’ve now got the video of Robinson’s conversation with local legend Nick Thayer, and you can watch it in full below.

Over the course of the 45 minute chat, Robinson covered everything from the inception of his career to the path that led to his career-changing album Worlds and – fittingly, considering the conference’s focus on ‘Discovery’ – his words of advice for the many young and emerging producers in the audience. Don’t play the game, was Robinson’s advice – focus instead on being true to your own tastes. “The more effort you put into changing the game, the less likely it is to happen. The best subversion happens naturally,” Robinson said.

“I think the better way to do it is try and do something that stands out. And having an identity is really important for that… I’m not saying authenticity is this magic bullet,” he added. “You might do something authentic and just have bad taste.” Watch the full keynote address below, and stay tuned for more to come, from Steve Aoki, the panels on Team Flume and Team Peking Duk, and more.
