Pioneering UK electronica act The Orb is celebrating a quarter of a century by releasing the ultimate singles collection – a four disc boxset traversing their greatest tracks, a discerning selection of remixes, a live disc and a DVD of film clips and promo videos.
Main-man Alex Paterson and his revolving cast of collaborators have been keeping clubbers stocked with trippy back-to-mine ambient house anthems since 1988, and the singles collection takes listeners on a chronological journey through the evolution of The Orb’s sound, from debut single A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Universe via the timeless classic Little Fluffy Clouds to 2001’s trip-hop influenced Ghostdancing. Meanwhile, the remix disc packs in six re-rubs by The Orb themselves, as well as classic remixes by Andrew Weatherall, Mark Pritchard and a fledgling Coldcut.
The Orb haven’t been idle in recent years – just last year they toured Australia and released a collaborative album with dub mainstay Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, The Orbserver in the Star House. They’re backing up the release of the singles boxset with a three month tour of the UK and US, but no word yet on when we’ll next see them on our shores. In the meantime, you can pick up The Orb – History of the Future from Monday October 7.
