Taylor Swift is now second favourite to win triple j’s Hottest 100

Following a grassroots social media campaign by Buzzfeed Australia to get Taylor Swift into triple j’s Hottest 100, the singer is now the second favourite to top the poll, according to Sportsbet.

Sitting second only to Peking Duk’s High, Tay’s Shake It Off is a $5 chance to come in at #1 on the list. In less than 24 hours she has bumped off other firm favourites including Chet Faker’s Talk Is Cheap, Milky Chance’s Stolen Dance, and Hilltop Hoods’ Cosby Sweater. Other strong contenders to top the annual poll include Future Islands, Hilltop Hoods, The War On Drugs, ZHU and Caribou. The longest odds on offer are for Deadmau5’s Pets and La Roux’s Uptight Downtown.

Lauched two days ago, Buzzfeed Australia’s social media campaign to get Shake It Off into the countdown – despite the song having not been played on triple j in 2014 – has quickly gained momentum over the last 24 hours. While the song is not listed on the voting page due to the lack of airplay in 2014, listeners do have the option to add it in the voting process. And even though history tells us that un-shortlisted songs rarely poll well, Alanis Morissette famously managed to get three songs from Jagged Little Pill into the 1995 Hottest 100 without any airplay.

The Hottest 100 voting rules state that triple j “reserves the right to remove artists from the list who have benefited from competitions or commercial campaigns that incentivise fans to vote for them”. However, so far the #Tay4Hottest100 campaign appears to be above board, with station manager Chris Scaddan telling “People are welcome to add songs manually to their voting shortlist and those votes count exactly the same as anything voted from the Triple J list.”
