Sydney’s Meanwhile is shutting down from tonight

Earlier this evening, we received the terrible news that Sydney’s Saturday night house and techno institution The Spice Cellar is ceasing operations at its new home in the basement of Erskineville’s Imperial Hotel, after the venue was threatened with its second 72-hour shut-down notice in five weeks.

Now comes the news that weekly Friday night party Meanwhile is also ceasing operations at the Imperial as of tonight Friday 24 July, meaning tonight’s Bondi Beach Radio Takeover has been cancelled.

In a Facebook post earlier today, Friday night club Meanwhile wrote that “as of right now” it will no longer be continuing at the Imperial Hotel, “due to a continued vendetta carried out by OLGR and the local police.” The Meanwhile crew write that it’s “far from the end” for the club night, and they’re doing everything possible to find an alternative venue for next Friday’s show with The Meeting Tree.

Read the full post below and mourn the temporary death of Sydney’s favourite #sickpartygood; stay tuned for more news to come on where Meanwhile and The Spice Cellar will be setting up shop next.

To all our sickest Late Night Players,

It is with a heavy heart that we regret to inform everyone that as of right now,Meanwhile will no longer continue at our beloved home, The Imperial Hotel Erskineville.

Due to a continued vendetta carried out by OLGR and the local police The Imperial Hotels basement nightclub will no longer be operating what so ever for the foreseeable future.

What we can say, is that after nearly a year running and over 50 parties, by the beard of Zeus some epic shit and good times have occurred. We could never have imagined how many people would support and get involved in our Inner West late night clubbing experience.

To every single person who attended, DJ’d and got involved, we cannot thank you enough for being a part of something we could not be more proud of. The vibe, community and overall late night experience was something like we’ve never seen before and we couldn’t be more sad to bring this kind of news to everyone.

What we can say without even the slightest shred of doubt, that this is far from the end for Meanwhile. What we do next is something that we need to go back to the drawing board on but we can assure everyone right now that in whatever frequency and capacity it is, we’ll be back, bigger, stronger and more awesome than ever

In regards to our show with The Meeting Tree next Friday, we’re doing everything we can to find an alternate option (feel free to hit us up with some sick Inner West suggestions) as it’s something we are so excited to put on, so bear with us while we curate something just as good.

Stay tuned crew, there’s plenty more to come.

Much love,

Kiran, Al, Winston, Matt, Sophie, Erin and Verena.
