Stream Mr Oizo’s brain-melting new album now

From oddball nineties gems like Flat Beat to his divisive EPs with Boys Noize as Handbraekes, we’re thankful that Mr Oizo has remained consistently weird over the course of his career. And, we’re happy to report, his new album The Church doesn’t break that trend.

Mr Oizo has a long history with Ed Banger (even releasing an the Rubber EP with Gaspard from Justice in 2010) but The Church has found a home on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. The LA-based collective is definitely no stranger to experimental electronic releases, with FlyLo’s own jazz-influenced style leading a pack of weirdos including The Gaslamp Killer, Lapalux and Thundercat, so Mr Oizo’s Marilyn Manson-collaborating head fits right in.

“With a small computer now, you can have a big sound just like the big producers,” Oizo told Dazed Digital this week. “But this is not interesting – what I’m trying to capture is something that you can’t really control”.

He’s done a pretty incredible job of that – from the hissing techno on Torero to the fucked-up video game soundtrack that is Mass Doom, the album is varied in its nuttiness. ISoap sounds like the original tapes from a 70s funk jam have been melted, warped and somehow played back again, and the amount of tongue-in-cheek creepiness on title track The Church is enough to make it a left-field hit. Hit play below to hear it.
