Steve Aoki just repped heaps of Australian music on Diplo & Friends
If you need any further proof of how well homegrown dance music is doing overseas right now, there’s this: Golden Features, The Presets and Yolanda Be Cool have all been dropped by Steve Aoki in his Australia-heavy mix for the latest episode of Diplo & Friends.
Across his debut mix for the BBC Radio 1 show, Aoki played Tell Me by Golden Features – the track that cruelly missed out on placing in this year’s triple j hottest 100 by one place – as well as the Golden Features remix of No Fun by The Presets and Yolanda Be Cool’s club chart-ruling Sugarman edit. Not bad for a two hour show.
“Love him or hate him, you just can’t deny Steve Aoki,” host Diplo introduced, before the Dim Mak label head stepped up to show off his taste. ”[He’s a ] good friend of mine, 10 years. One of the first guys to ever book me. My first remix came out on Dim Mak. I never thought we’d be in this game together ten years later, but he keeps surprising me.”
As unpredictable as his own career might be, the Los Angelean’s love for Australian music shouldn’t come as a shock – from name-checking Flume in his EMC keynote to signing Melbourne star Uberjak’d to his label, Aoki’s long been a fan of Australian music.
