Skrillex speaks on Deadmau5: “He’s an arsehole and he knows that”

Before he was the biggest thing in dubstep, Sonny Moore handed Deadmau5 a USB full of songs at a HARD Events party in L.A. – some of the first under his new name of Skrillex – and wound up signed to Mau5trap with a spot supporting the superstar on his 2010 American tour.

Five years later, Skrillex and Deadmau5 are two of the biggest names in dance music, but they don’t roll quite as closely these days. As New York radio station AMP 92.3 was quick to remind the OWSLA head when he stopped by for an interview yesterday, last month Deadmau5 even took the time to putting together a troll version of Where Are Ü Now, the colossal Jack Ü hit the mau5 thinks “blows donkeyballs”.

Skrillex’s take? “I’ll always have love for Joel because he put me on at an early time, but he’s an arsehole,” Moore told 92.3 when they brought up the now-infamous ‘remix’. “And everyone knows that, and he knows that. And that’s kinda his thing. I mean, the one thing that is unfortunate about it is that he has a record label. And when you have a record label, you gotta be a leader. He has people that are like, signed to him. And I couldn’t imagine being a leader, going out in the public image [with] such a negative attitude.

“I don’t take it personally because I’m secure with myself and what I do – I love what I do,” Skrillex continued. “But I almost feel bad that that’s his one way of getting attention rather than going into music and curating. I think his attitude’s changed over the last couple years…I think a lot of people are getting tired with his attitude, calling people out on Twitter.

“I personally have become less connected to his music because his personality is almost overshadowing that, when he is such an incredible artist.” But don’t expect Joel to shed any tears over the comments – he’s busy working on a new album and building a super studio on his property in regional Canada, emerging every now and then to troll gamers in true Deadmau5 style.
