Skrillex gets real on Deadmau5: “He’s an arsehole and he’s probably ashamed of it”

By his own admission, Skrillex doesn’t like doing interviews. Dance music’s reluctant superstar doesn’t do them often, which makes his recent chat with US publication Complex all the more worth reading.

In the just-published interview, Sonny Moore talks working with Bieber, running a record label, why there’s never been a better time to be DIY as an artist – and his former mentor Deadmau5, who Moore got into a highly-publicised Twitter spat with late last year.

“The only time I really got upset [with deadmau5] was when he started taking stabs at Marshmello, acting like such a fucking bully,” Skrillex told Complex about the beef, which erupted when Joel Zimmerman called Marshmello “annoying” and described his fans as a “brain dead posse of deaf sheep” on Twitter.

“Marshmello is this young kid who looks up to deadmau5, and the first tweet he gets from deadmau5 is talking shit about him. That’s when I had to stand up and be like, ‘Stop being a fucking bully to people,’” Moore said.

“It’s sad, because I can’t change the way deadmau5 is. He knows he’s an asshole and he glorifies himself that way. I think he’s probably ashamed of it. He’s a different person in the public than he is in person. He DM’ed me afterwards and was like, ‘If you ever need anybody to talk, if you need a friend, I’m here.’ He’s a little more sensitive in the DMs, but when it comes to his public image, I don’t know.”

As Skrillex sees it, jealousy might be part of the reason Deadmau5 is on the offensive about Jack Ü’s pop collaborations. “Maybe it’s because his music hasn’t been as ambitious; I think he may be scared to really step outside of what he does,” Moore said. “But when someone else tries to do something new and they’re successful at it? I’ve put plenty of other records out that aren’t as successful but he doesn’t talk about those, you know what I mean? He’s only talking about things that are popping off.”

That’s not to say Skrillex doesn’t respect the mau5’s music – last year he went on record to say that he still thinks Joel Zimmerman is “such an incredible artist.” Read the full interview over on Complex, and revisit Skrillex’s new Purple Lamborghini clip below.
