Back in 2009, Shooting Stars was one of those tracks you just couldn’t escape. Now, some eight years later, Bag Raiders’ breakthrough hit has made an unlikely comeback thanks to the power of the internet.
Those Shooting Stars memes you’ve probably seen in your Facebook feed have pushed the track onto the US Billboard Charts, where it’s currently sitting at #7 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, #11 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts, and #13 on Billboard’s list of the top Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs.
Even Bag Raiders’ self-titled debut album is reaping the rewards of meme-dom, hitting #15 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
As inthemix wrote in our list of the best Australian dance tracks of all time – where Shooting Stars placed at #29 – the track almost missed its moment. “It first arrived as a B-side to Bag Raiders’ 2008 single Turbo Love, from back when the duo were on their second release with Sydney indie Bang Gang 12 Inches and turning out clubby, bloggy electro jams,” we wrote.
“Shooting Stars was always destined for bigger things and when Modular picked the duo up the next year it got a rightful single release, a top 20 spot in that year’s Hottest 100 and a legacy as a memorable and momentous tune for its creators, the local scene and all its listeners.”
