Richie Hawtin and Magda do One Night Only
Sydney’s One Night Only sideshow is something of a Future Music Festival tradition, and this time ‘round, techno maven Richie Hawtin is in the headline slot. The Minus boss will take over The Hi-Fi on Friday 1 March, alongside the long-overdue Magda (she was last here to ring in 2006), for a party that runs 9pm till 2am. Tickets go on-sale Tuesday 19 February through Oztix.
From his formative experiments of the early ‘90s to his current standing as a techno icon, Hawtin has always been driven by what’s next. It’s what makes him one of the most fascinating figures in electronic music. 2010 and 2011 saw Hawtin reinvent Plastikman, the most prolific of his production alter-egos, for a 15-stop live tour. Developed alongside visual architects Derivative, the “highly concentrated one-hour experience” presented a very different side to the Ibiza-beloved superstar DJ.
From late October 2012, longtime compadres Hawtin and Loco Dice followed Tiesto’s lead and set out on a tour of North American college campuses. Unsurprisingly, though, that’s where the Tiesto parallels ended. Hawtin and Dice coined their circuit ‘CNTRL: Beyond EDM’ in a bid to take “the more futuristic and underground side of the genre” to malleable young minds. “I don’t think we’re too late,” he told inthemix. “I think we’re right on the cusp, maybe being a little too early. But this is stage one. If this goes well, there’s the West Coast, there’s middle America, there’s a lot more we can do.”
