Richie Hawtin and Deadmau5 announce back-to-back set

It’s no secret that Canadian electronic exports Richie Hawtin and Deadmau5 share a mutual respect, despite their divergent paths. As Joel Zimmerman put it to inthemix in our impromptu Twitter ‘interview’, Hawtin is “very intelligent and applies himself to his work more than most”. At the EDMBiz conference in Las Vegas last June, Hawtin told the room, “From an outsider’s perspective, it could look like Joel is manufactured, or something like that. But I really respect what he’s doing, because he’s taking it to another level, a level that I never thought possible when I started.”

At the South By Southwest conference in Texas this month, the two producers will come together for an unexpected ‘versus’ set at the SXSW interactive closing party, hosted by Media Temple. It all goes down next Tuesday 12 March at Stubb’s BBQ. Earlier that day, the pair will have a conversation about music and technology at the Austin Convention Centre.

The back-to-back set is sure to feature much geeking-out over gear, and a less mainstage-geared approach from Deadmau5, who enjoys paring it back. We have to wonder if this is the opportunity for play this ‘minimal’ excursion. As he put it at the time in typically blunt style: “It’s minimal. Subtle changes over long periods of time. That’s pretty much the point. Looking for a ‘drop’? No, not all my tracks are same, I like to switch it up…so wait untill I make your big farty bassline club smasher with ‘sick drops’ or just go listen to Skrillex or something in the meantime.”

While Zimmerman fine-tunes the Deadmau5 live show for Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Hawtin is midway through his Future Music Festival travels around Australia. His tour kicked off in Sydney with a special club show alongside former Minus recruit Magda, then continued on to Brisbane with the Cocoon Heroes (a severe case of flooding moved the party to a restaurant in the grandstands) and an open-air stage in Perth.
