Reddit users are debating the best Essential Mix of all time

With over 20 years of episodes to choose from, picking a favourite Essential Mix is no easy feat. But right now, Reddit users on the site’s Electronic Music board are at work discussing their picks for the BBC Radio 1 show’s best-ever moments, and the list they’ve come up with makes for compelling reading.

But with most of the submissions coming from the past five years – the crowd on R/ElectronicMusic are young with tastes that tend to lean towards the American end of dance music – don’t expect to see classic mixes from the likes of Frankie Knuckles pulling in the upvotes.

Instead, it’s Nero’s 2010 Essential Mix debut leading the charge of Reddit’s all time favourites. Recorded at the height of dubstep’s popularity and spanning tracks from Flux Pavilion, Skrillex and supergroup Magnetic Man, the Nero mix captures the moment big bass wobbles took over the mainstream. Revisit it below.

Next in line is Nicolas Jaar, whose “bold, brave and timeless” turn earned him the title of Essential Mix of the Year in 2012. The other honourable mentions? Mixes from Caribou, Zeds Dead and Beardyman all get a look in, as do oldies in the shape of Paul Oakenfold’s 1994 Goa Essential Mix and Daft Punk’s 1997 classic. See Reddit’s full list over here.
