ODB and Eazy-E holograms on Rock The Bells 2013 line-up

This year’s Coachella line-up had a hard act to follow. In 2012, Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg stole the show in the Indio desert with a cameo from Tupac Shakur, convincing at least a few stoned minds that they were witnessing the real thing. That hologram – sorry, “completely synthetic human being” – was sure to be just the beginning. Countless “what dead music star would you resurrect?” polls showed up around the internet. A parody Coachella 2013 line-up poster did the rounds, headlined by holograms of Mozart, Michael Jackson and The Clash.

Now the world’s premier hip hop festival Rock The Bells has announced two “original virtual performances” from late rappers on its 2013 line-up: Ol Dirty Bastard, together with the living members of Wu-Tang Clan, and ‘Godfather Of Gangsta Rap’ Eazy-E. The announcement got a descriptive ’!!!!!!!????? (Rest of the line-up looks dope, though!)’ from Z-Trip on Facebook.

On the Rock The Bells Facebook page, a legion of fans are criticising the festival for “disrespecting the dead”, while others are buzzing at the prospect of ODB “resurrected”. (Having witnessed the shambolic energy of Wu-Tang at Coachella this year, we hope no one stumbles through the projection at Rock The Bells.)

Aside from the controversial hologram contingent, though, the bill brings Common, Earl Sweatshirt, Talib Kweli, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples and more. With the inclusion of names like Chase & Status and Mimosa, Rock The Bells has touched on bass music too for its 10th anniversary celebration. The festival tour sets off in September.
