Nom De Strip and Chris Lake leak their new Kylie track for her birthday
On Monday evening in the US, Nom De Strip, the alias of LA-based DJ and producer Chris Elliott, posted Skirt on his SoundCloud, a track featuring the voice of Kylie Minogue. Chris Lake, who claims executive producer credit on the track, said he was “excited Nom’s decided to be a naughty little shit and leak it to the public, so now I can share it.”
Co-written by The-Dream (Rihanna’s Umbrella, Beyoncé’s Single Ladies ), the track is hard and techy; there are drops and distorted vocal layers. It’s unlike anything heard from Minogue before, or from any other pop artist. The tune’s first public performance came during Lake’s set at Pacha Ibiza’s opening party on Saturday night as a dub version. Within a few hours of posting, the track had notched nearly 10,000 plays on SoundCloud.
Thanks to a post on his Instagram last winter, fans of Nom De Strip had known he was in the studio with the pop star. Along with Lake and Calvin Harris protégé Burns, Nom De Strip is part of a team of producers giving an EDM influence to Minogue’s new album. The songwriting collaboration with The-Dream serves as a reminder that earlier this year, Minogue signed with Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s multi-genre management juggernaut.
Far from a true leak at this point, Minogue tweeted a link to the SoundCloud post herself on Tuesday morning, her 45th birthday. Still, given the casual nature of Skirt’s release, it’s unclear if it will be an official single or even an album track, at least in this form. For fans of all involved, it offers a unique opportunity to hear a collaboration from three very different artists.
For Nom De Strip, it’s a massive coup. Only 12 hours after he first posted the track, it racked up over 120,000 plays, which he humorously pointed out on Twitter constituted a third of his total plays from the last three years. Not only that, plays of his own Clouds EP nearly doubled overnight.
