Mix Master Mike [Audio]: Droppin’ science at We Love Sounds

STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

Turntablist extraordinaire Mix Master Mike was last in Australia only just over a year ago when he toured with compatriots the Beastie Boys as headliners of the Good Vibrations tour, a visit that itself took place only six months after he’d been manning the decks at the Parklife festival across the country. And now he’s coming back to complete his hat-trick of appearances at Australian festivals with a showing on the We Love Sounds lineup. He’s working as hard as ever, but this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as it seems like Mix Master Mike is perpetually droppin’ science on his fans around the world. And yep, in 2008 he’s still on the road.

“The tour thing has pretty much lasted for about four years straight,” Mike laughed when he spoke to ITM. And don’t make the mistake of thinking that when the Beastie Boys take a rest, that Mix Master Mike takes a rest too. Oh no, certainly not. “When I stop with the Beastie Boys, they stop – but I keep going,” he laughs again.

But there’s a reason that when it comes to turntable trickery, you don ‘t get much more elite than Mix Master Mike – after all, this is the same guy who won the DMC Championships so many times he was asked politely to step down from the competition. As he prepares to return to Australia for the We Love Sounds festival, ITM’s Angus Paterson speaks to Mix Master Mike about being one of the most consistent turntablists that’s ever worked the decks.
