Ever wanted to have your mixing skills critiqued by a panel of dance legends? Here’s your chance: legendary Canadian turntablist A-Trak is launching a new DJing and beatmaking competition called the Goldie Awards, happening this September in Brooklyn.
There are two categories in the competition: a DJ battle, and a beatmaking battle. It’s seriously easy to enter: simply record a short video of your work, and upload it to YouTube or Instagram with the hashtag #GoldieAwards. You can also enter the video link here. (NB: you can only enter one category, so choose wisely. Submissions end at midnight August 6.)
From those videos, six contestants will be chosen and flown to Brooklyn for the finals on September 7, where they’ll be taken through two competition rounds. Pretty sweet deal, right?
DJs will be judged on originality and creativity, technical skill and tightness, musical selection and crowd response and stage presence. For beatmakers, it’s all about originality and creativity, technical quality, musical range and crowd response.
A-Trak’s bringing together an A-list judging panel for the event — Diplo, Just Blaze, Mannie Fresh, Craze, Mija, Destructo and The Whooligan will all be there.
The winner of the DJ battle gets to perform at Fools Gold Day Off festival, while the beatmaker will have a song released on the Fools Gold label. For more information head to the Goldie Awards website, and watch A-Trak’s intro vid below.
