Lockouts force Sydney’s favourite late night club out of the CBD

Sydney’s favourite late night underground house and techno club, the Spice Cellar, will move out of its CBD home after this Easter long weekend, the owners told inthemix today. The Spice Cellar’s owners Murat Kilic and Rebecca Alder said that the club will relocate from its Elizabeth St home to a new secret location, in a move that’s “definitely prompted by the lockouts.”

The Spice Cellar is renowned for hosting super-late parties that run until 8am or beyond, with a swathe of local and visiting underground house and techno talent; in the coming weeks the club will host Audiojack, Fritz Kalkbrenner and Michelle Owen, amongst others. But the club – along with other late night venues in the CBD and Kings Cross – suffered as a result of last February’s lockout laws that ban entry after 1.30am and alcohol service between 3am and 5am.

After its coming Easter Long Weekend last hurrah, the club’s basement venue in the CBD will become a full-time restaurant and bar, Barrio Cellar, in collaboration with the team behind Kings Cross’ Mexican bar Barrio Chino. The club’s music program will relocate to another yet-to-be-announced Sydney venue. “We are definitely at a point where a bigger location is needed due to demand,” Spice owner Murat Kilic said, adding that the club is also looking at “a number of new ventures in Melbourne, Bali and Ibiza.”

Earlier today, the Darlinghurst Business Partnership – a City of Sydney lobby group comprising the owners of businesses like Ching-a-Lings and The Record Store – called on the state government to either repeal the lockout laws or expand them statewide. The group condemned the laws as unfair on small businesses in the Darlinghurst area. “We must find a way to move beyond legislating for all based on the lowest common denominator,” the group declared in a press release.
