Listen: Four Tet mixes hip hop for Diplo’s radio show

As we heard on his FabricLive.59 mix (to name just one example), Four Tet is one of those studio magicians who measures up as DJ too. With the producer set to release his compilation album Pink in August, he swung by Diplo & Friends on BBC Radio 1 for a mix-up. This time, the brief was to do something different. “A great friend of mine, Four Tet, is in the mix tonight with a special hip hop set, very chilled-out,” Diplo announced at the top of the show in his slinkiest radio voice. “Relax, sit in your recliner, it’s a sexy set.” For his “sexy set”, the man otherwise known as Kieran Hebden weaves together tracks from D’Angelo, Masta Killa, Pharrell and others across a luxuriant 50-something minutes.

“Four Tet: one of my heroes,” Diplo adds later in the show. “Definitely one of my inspirations when I look to producers and tastemakers. This set is sort of leftfield for a lot of Four Tet fans, but this guy knows good music. So, much love…”

Back in April, Diplo signed on to BBC Radio 1 for a new weekly residency, adding another notch to an already-illustrious CV. Since that first broadcast, the Mad Decent boss has welcomed some killer guests, including Buraka Som Sistema’s J-Wow, Brodinski, Crookers, Flosstradamus, Clockwork and Dillon Francis. Some weeks, though, it’s all about Diplo in the mix for two hours, presenting a stack of exclusives and re-edits.

The Four Tet-featuring show also included an hour mix from TNGHT, the production team of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice. You can listen to the full broadcast of Diplo and Friends over at the BBC Radio 1 website, or hit play on Four Tet’s mix below.
