Inside inthemix’s epic HARD house party with Destructo, Bloody Beetroots and friends
As Stereosonic took a breather between weekends, the festival’s rollcall of dance music A-listers had a few days of downtime in Sydney. There were a few ways for the international contingent to fill the week off: the Electronic Music Conference, some sideshows, beach-going and as you’d expect, just a bit of partying. Last night, there was plenty of the latter as inthemix teamed up with HARD for a house party of epic proportions, just like we’ve done with Swedish House Mafia and Paul Oakenfold before.
HARD head Destructo brought his friends the Bloody Beetroots, Clockwork/RL Grime, What So Not, Generik and more to Sydney’s suburbs, Wild Turkey American Honey brought the booze, we hired a waterfront mansion for the night and rounded up 30 competition winners – plus two guests-of-honour flown over from the U.S. – to get the party started.
As the festival brand responsible for Holy Ship!, HARD L.A., HARD Day of the Dead and a swag more of North America’s coolest events, there was never any doubt that we’d be in for a big night. Sure enough, the HARD x inthemix house party didn’t disappoint: to kick things off, Destructo and local Kaz James went back-to-back, before it was Bloody Beetroots don Bob Rifo’s turn to handle things. But it wasn’t the Rifo set you might’ve expected: house was the order of the day, and the Italian surprised with a set that included Disclosure’s You & Me, Inner City’s Good Life, Julio Bashmore’s Au Seve and even Strings of Life.
Then it was over to Clockwork/RL Grime (hint: they’re both aliases of L.A. whiz Henry Steinway) and What So Not’s Emoh to bring the trap, while special guest party-goers GTA, Flume, Flight Facilities and Nina Las Vegas watched from the wings. Steinway spent plenty of time on the mic (“when I’ve had a few drinks I turn into a hype man,” he told us), and he and Emoh dropped their brand new collaboration – a track made earlier that week in the space of four and half hours – for the very first time.
Destructo got back on the decks to throw-down Hot Natured’s runaway hit Reverse Skydiving, while the track’s guest star Anabel Englund rocked up to handle the vocals live (there’s insta-video of that below). Flipcup was played, champagne was sprayed, Flight Facilities’ Hugo lost his shirt and the music only stopped when a security guard had to physically unplug the decks mid-track. After that, it was over to The Backroom for the after-party where Calvin Harris and Burns joined the kick-on. You can check out all the photos from the night right here – let us assure you, it was one hell of a party.
