Hear Carl Cox’s 50th birthday Essential Mix

“Oh yes, oh yes Space, let me see you one time…” It’s a call that has rung out across the dancefloor at Space Ibiza for many seasons now, and last Tuesday 31 July, the man on the mic Carl Cox was back there doing what he does best. This time, though, the DJ was celebrating his 50th birthday and the people at BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix were there to record the momentous set. Beginning with rolling tech-house grooves and building from there, the segment of Cox’s set shows him comfortable as ever in the Space booth. The 50th birthday celebrations also featured the ‘premiere Ibiza performance’ from house legends Masters At Work, along with Lucca, Pan-Pot, Andy C, Artwork, The Revenge and many more.

In an interview with inthemix last year, Cox got reflective about his legacy, saying he was in for the long haul, not the quick win. “I might’ve been the number 1 DJ for years, but then I went down,” he said. “However I managed to maintain what I’m about as an artist, whether it’s commercially successful or not. Once you understand that, you can keep going. Even though The Rolling Stones don’t have hit records anymore, their fan-base keeps on going.”

Also featured on the special extended Essential Mix were two sets from Sankeys Ibiza, a club that’s making its mark on the White Isle with a resolutely ‘underground’-leaning mission. Sankeys features recurring nights this season like Heidi presents The Jackathon, Steve Lawler’s Viva Warriors weekly residency, Solomun and his Diynamic friends and London-born rave-up Bugged Out!. The Essential Mix went for Sankeys sets from DJ Sneak and Matt Tolfrey. You can stream the sets over at the Essential Mix site.

In addition to the Essential Mix broadcast, Cox also recorded a section of his Space birthday set for the Global mix series (listen below): “If you couldn’t listen to my Essential Mix link earlier, don’t worry – this week on Global we’ve got two hours of my birthday set from Carl Cox at Space Ibiza, the 5-7am slot!”
