Hear ‘4ware’, the first official taste of Deadmau5’s new album
Over the weekend, Deadmau5 gave fans the news they’d been waiting for: his next album is in the bag and will be out before the end of the year.
Joel Zimmerman’s sixth studio album keeps up his long tradition of wilfully-difficult LP names – this one’s called W:/2016ALBUM/; named, he says, after the location of the track files on his server. It will be released via mau5trap on December 2, without the assistance of Joel’s former label Astralwerks.
Zimmerman hasn’t revealed the tracklist for W:/2016ALBUM/ yet, but he has shared the first official taste of the album. He’s given BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong the first spin of 4ware, a track Tong says has the same vibe as the producer’s breakthrough hit Faxing Berlin. The horde may recognise 4ware as one of Joel’s SoundCloud experiments from back in March.
According to Joel,W:/2016ALBUM/ is a collection of the music he’s spent the last couple of years working on. Sonically “there’s an 80s sci-fi fantasy vibe to some of the melodies. I think that’s due to my purchase of a Prophet 10 [synthesiser],” he told the Radio 1 host.
“It’s been a really busy last couple years just with so many things going on, now I’m finally able to at least collect all the stuff I’ve been able to to do in the interim and slap it together and put it out,” he said. “I think I’ve just trained myself to be so picky that I have to be in my chair in my studio [to produce].” Get stuck into 4ware below.
