GTA V goes dance: Soulwax, Flying Lotus, Kavinsky curate radio stations

It’s safe to say that Grand Theft Auto V is the most anticipated game so far this decade, and not just for the upgraded graphics, epic story and the chance to wreak havoc in a futuristic version of Los Angeles. The Grand Theft Auto radio stations have always been a key part of game play (especially when you’re logging 100+ hours of drive-time in the game) with expertly curated track selections by big names like Iggy Pop and DJ Premier, but for the fifth edition in the series Rockstar have really outdone themselves.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Rockstar’s soundtrack supervisor Ivan Pavlovich revealed that LA legend DJ Pooh will host the West Coast Classics hip hop station (expect drops from Dre and Snoop), Blaxploitation icon Pam Grier will host the soul station and Bootsy Collins will host the boogie-funk station.

Most exciting of all, though, is the news that Rockstar have recruited everyone’s favourite creator of future-beats Flying Lotus to curate and host an electronic music station – with fellow GTA obsessive Tyler, The Creator along as co-host (who better to guide you through the slaughter of innocent bystanders than the king of shock tactics himself) – and according to a soundtrack list leaked on Reddit there’ll also be a radio station hosted by Belgian electro-edit kings Soulwax (tracklisting below). Kavinsky leaked on Twitter back in January that he’d be hosting a NightrideFM station for GTA V, but no details of the track listing have been revealed as yet.

FlyLo has picked a stack of his own tracks, plus cuts from Hudson Mohawke, Aphex Twin, Outkast, Clams Casino, footwork dude DJ Rashad and new Tyler track Garbage for his station, while the Soulwax station has the likes of Green Velvet, Tiga, The Hacker and Joe Goddard. With 15 music stations and 240 licensed songs (including, according to leaks, material from Rihanna, Queen and Elton John) there’ll be plenty of musical options to keep you inspired as you careen madly through traffic. GTA V drops on September 17 – in the meantime, there’s a brand new trailer below featuring the track Sleepwalking by Colorado ‘indietronic’ band The Chain Gang of 1974.
