Grandmaster Flash [Audio]: The master returns

Grandmaster Flash has long been widely lauded as the big ol’ daddy of DJ culture – building on the foundations of his vinyl loving forebears early in his career, and developing several techniques that became fundamental in the development and application of the DJ craft. Decades later, he’s still on the road and about to return to Australia for performances at Victoria’s The Hot BBQ and Sydney’s Becks’s Festival Bar, among others. What does he have to bring to the table all these years later?

“My highlight is educating people through music. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to do that,” Flash told ITM. And after all these years, how does he respond to being placed in front of different crowds, with different expectations, everytime he plays? “It’s godly, that’s all I can say. There’s something that happens in the first five or ten minutes. The audience gives off something, I give off something… I can’t tell you how I do it, it just happens! But it’s wonderful to be able to touch people in that way.”

He was last here for Future Music Festival last year, but a return from the amster is always welcome. ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to Grandmaster Flash about “taking you where you want to go…”
