It’s war: Gary Richards launches another floating festival to rival Holy Ship

Last August, Holy Ship mastermind Gary ‘Destructo’ Richards announced he would be stepping away from the festival’s parent company HARD Events to take up a role at rival organisation LiveStyle.

It didn’t appear to be an amicable split: LA Weekly reported at the time that Live Nation (who purchased a majority stake in HARD in 2012) chose not to renew Richards’ contract with the company. They also didn’t include him on Holy Ship’s 2018 bill — a festival he’s played every year since its inception — which caused a number of top-tier DJs to publicly criticise Live Nation.

But now it looks as if Richards will be getting his own back. While on stage last night in Brooklyn, the DJ announced that he was planning another cruise ship festival, supposedly called ‘Friend Ship’.

Official details are scarce at the moment, but two weeks ago he dropped this link on Twitter, which looks very much like a festival website:

Judging by the wave-like graphics on the page, it seems very likely that All My Friends/Friend Ship will be a cruise party.

We’ll have to wait and see whether Holy Ship’ famously dedicated fanbase (dubbed the Shipfam) will follow Richards to the new event.
