Founding member of A$AP Mob passes away
A$AP Yams, the co-founder and maestro behind the A$AP Mob, has died at the age of 26. No details on the cause of death have been made available at this time.
You may not have heard of A$AP Yams, but he was an important figure in modern hip-hop. As a founding member of the A$AP Mob he was responsible for recruiting A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg, who would go on to be the crew’s two breakout members. Yams was one of the first to realise the potential of Tumblr as a platform for hip-hop tastemaking and mixtape distribution, using it to popularise his crew at the same time artists like Odd Future were realising the platform’s value. Yams was profiled by The New Yorker in 2013 and described his role in the group by saying, “Rocky’s like Luke Skywalker, and I’m Yoda.”
The hip-hop community has paid tribute on social media.
