Experience 2: Dinosaurs are not extinct

I’m going to start with an analogy. Warehouse parties are like dinosaurs. Extinct. Well, in Canberra at least. The money wheel spun, times changed, and clubs began to dominate the clubbing scene. And just when you thought warehousing raving in Canberra was something only nostalgia could resurrect, a group of Canberrans pulled the dinosaur back from the brink. Jeremy Edwards, Ruth Robertson (Artemis) and Duncan Brown (Fast Twitch) are the group to thank. They, as the three co-promoters, along with DJs Xdream and Frodo, have established Experience – the closet thing to warehouse raving in Canberra. The first instalment in the series saw Misja Helsloot burn up the Mitchell Rock Climbing Centre in front of a crowd of over 600 people – a huge number by Canberra standards. The second instalment, entitled Experience 2, is planned for this Saturday (11 September) and features trance gurus Alphazone.

Alphazone, which consists of Alex Zwarg and Arne Reichelt, began their climb to fame with a remix of DJ Kim’s ‘Jetlag’ in 2001. Sure, the guys had been producing since 1996, but it was the ‘Jetlag’ remix that brought Alphazone to the attention of worldwide trance fans – the Alphazone sound had been created. Well-known tunes with the Alphazone stamp include remixes of the massive anthem Saltwater – ‘The Legacy’ and BT – ‘Revolution’ and, of course, their own creations ‘Rockin’ and ‘Revelation’. Zwarg and Reichelt also run record label Skywarp Records. Whilst the duo have preformed extensively throughout Europe, this will be their first tour in Australia. Prepare yourself for a set filled with driving basslines, energetic rhythms, progressive melodies and, as you would expect, plenty of uplifting breakdowns!

There’s plenty more to keep all purveyors of electronic music on the dance floor. Inside the centre expect a stream of trance, hard trance, hard style and hard dance. Local DJs providing the entertainment are Enerv8, Xdream, Artemis, Fast Twitch, Frodo and Loose Cannon. Sydney duo Diggs & Morro, who supported Blank & Jones at Babylon in 2003, will be warming up the dance floor before Alphazone. The indoor arena is going to be an eye-opener with four lasers, a bright white light, mammoth sound and some funky warehouse d├ęcor installed to create the necessary atmosphere!

Trance and hard dance not your thing? Don’t worry, the Experience team has your needs under control! OLLiE, Absolute, Matt Rowan (Syd), Tigz (Syd), Dante, Tomic, Para and Bury will be laying down breaks, prog/tech house, techno, dnb and happy hardcore for your listening pleasure in the outdoor arena. Those of you afraid to brave the cold, never fear, I’m told the outdoor arena will be under a marquee featuring three heaters – so now there’s no excuse not to dance!

And just to remind you of those details again: Experience 2 will be held on Saturday 11 September 2004 at the Mitchell Rock Climbing Centre. Proceedings kick off at 9.30pm and a mere $20 will get you in the door. This is a 16+ event. More info is available on ITM WhatsOn.

The promoters are excited, the DJs are ready, and I’m bouncing with anticipation already. Come along and prove that the dinosaur isn’t extinct!
