Exclusive: Beatport reveals the top selling Australian artists and tracks of 2016

Online dance hub Beatport has crunched the numbers on Australia’s listening habits to reveal which tracks and genres have been trending over the last 18 months — and the results might surprise you.

When it comes to our most popular genres, techno and its not-closely-related brother tech-house have consistently battled for the top two spots in the Asia-Pacific region, with techno recently coming out on top. Meanwhile, electro-house has taken a hit in the rankings, dropping outside the Top 10.

This presents an interesting comparison to the global Beatport sales trends that were reported for the first time at last month’s IMS conference in Ibiza. The #1 genre globally was also techno, slightly outselling tech-house, while trance and drum & bass enjoyed a resurgent 12 months in sales across the world. The downturn in electro-house for Asia-Pacific buyers also mirrors the global trend.

Meanwhile, genres steadily gaining popularity in the Asia-Pacific region include progressive house, electronica/downtempo, indie dance/nu-disco and psytrance. Check out the full graphic below.

As for our favourite tracks? Prok & Fitch’s huge Green Velvet collab’ ‘Sheeple’ was the most bought track from Australasia over the last 18 months, while Sonny Fodera and Mat.Joe’s remix of Gershon Jackson’s ‘Take It Easy’ landed at #2. Elsewhere, there’s the Riva Starr edit of ‘Groovestylin’, the Vini Vici remix of ‘Hilight Tribe’, and tracks from Dennis Crux, Reinier Zonneveld and Enrico Sangiuliano.

In the global Australian artist rankings, house head Sonny Fodera and Melbourne favourite Will Sparks have taken out the top two places, with Timmy Trumpet, Flume and DJ duo NERVO rounding out the top five.
