Empire of the Sun return with new album ‘Ice On A Dune’

At one point there it seemed like we may never hear from Aussie space cadets Empire of the Sun again. The Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore pairing scooped the 2009 ARIA awards with their debut album Walking on a Dream and even received two Brit nominations. However, after their 2010 Brit Awards performance the pair drifted apart, Luke Steele took the project and toured it extensively around Europe himself, before Empire of the Sun went quiet. Thankfully, in late 2011 the pair reunited in the studio and since then, it’s been confirmed a new record is in the works. Today, the duo has announced that they’ll be delivering their long-awaited second album in June.

Titled Ice On The Dune, the new album is proceeded by a cryptic trailer entitled Discovery. In true Empire of the Sun style they’re giving very little away, the trailer only featuring 20 seconds of new music. In 2011, however, Luke Steele told NME that “the new songs are grander, more Disney, more colourful.” Luckily for fans the trailer suggests it’s more National Treasure than High School Musical, with the video set around the discovery of cave etchings of the band. A small clip of music at the end suggests the duo isn’t straying too far from the sound that catapulted them to success with their last album.

Not ones to hand information over on a platter, the pair have accompanied the strange video with an equally odd (and lengthy) story about the sun’s course across the sky, priests possessing the spirits of wild animals and the fate of an Emperor and Prophet. So, concept album then? Guess we’ll find out in June.
