Deadmau5 goes techno with a new track and alias
Last year’s SXSW saw a rather unusual pairing: Deadmau5 linked up with fellow Canadian Richie Hawtin to talk about technology and play a back-to-back set of minimal techno at the SXSW Interactive closing party.
A year later and it seems that the partnership of these two “skinny white kids” has born more fruit: LessThan3 has revealed that the new release on Hawtin’s iconic PLUS 8 imprint – the first in two years – is a stonking slice of techno by the man we know better for big melodic prog and Twitter beef.
“It’s been nearly two years since the last PLUS 8 record, but it seemed fitting that this record in particular, made by another skinny white kid, became part of the label’s collection and history,” Richie Hawtin wrote on the PLUS 8 Soundcloud page. Deadmau5 has released the new track Sunspot (White Space Conflict) under the alias testpilot, a new moniker for techno releases of which, according to Zimmerman, he’s “got a bunch.”
This isn’t the first time the track Sunspot has been aired: eagle-eyed Deadmau5 fans will notice that an early version of the track was uploaded to – and quickly deleted from – Deadmau5’s Soundcloud a couple of years ago; it lives on via YouTube.
