Carl Cox celebrating his 50th birthday with a bang

Those lucky enough to have caught Carl Cox at his one-off show in Melbourne over the weekend can attest to the DJ’s legendary stamina. “Banging as always,” attested one ITMer in the Melbourne forum, which pretty well sums it up. This year sees the UK hero ticking off a significant milestone: his 50th birthday. Of those 50 years, at least 30 have been dedicated to dance music, and he remains one of the scene’s foremost ambassadors. It’s as a DJ that Cox has been most influential, and his birthday bash will celebrate that.

The 50th is happening at Cox’s hallowed Space Ibiza residency on Tuesday 31 July. Along with a centrepiece set from the man himself, there’s a huge support cast including Lucca, Pan-Pot, Andy C, Artwork, The Revenge and many more. The trumpcard, however, is the ‘premiere Ibiza performance’ from house legends Masters At Work. “I’m over the moon getting Louie and Kenny on board,” Cox says. “I have been trying to get them to play at Space with me for years.” The party is one of only seven scheduled performances for ‘Little’ Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez in 2012.

In an interview with inthemix last year, Cox got reflective about his legacy, saying he was in for the long haul, not the quick win. “I might’ve been the number 1 DJ for years, but then I went down,” he said. “However I managed to maintain what I’m about as an artist, whether it’s commercially successful or not. Once you understand that, you can keep going. Even though The Rolling Stones don’t have hit records anymore, their fan-base keeps on going.”
