Whether you’d care to admit it or not, by now you’re probably aware that Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift used to date, that they’ve since broken up, and that Taylor now has a new boyfriend called Tom Hiddleston.
If you’re wondering what this month’s tabloid gossip has to do with dance music, bear with us. Yesterday TMZ reported that Harris and Swift broke up because of a fight they had after collaborating on This Is What You Came For, Calvin’s latest chart-topping hit. Then Rolling Stone confirmed with Swift’s representatives that she wrote the song’s lyrics under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg and now, Calvin himself has admitted that we have Taylor to thank for his latest track.
But what started as a very civil Twitter shout-out to his ex-girlfriend – “amazing lyric writer and she smashed it as usual,” Calvin praised – quickly devolved into a live journal of the Scottish superstar’s hurt feelings.
So while Taylor wrote the lyrics and contributed some of the vocals, Calvin produced and arranged This Is What You Came For. The problem?
According to TMZ, while Swift chose to be credited under a pseudonym to keep the focus on the song and off the pair’s relationship, things soured when Harris said in a radio interview that he and Taylor “hadn’t even spoken about” collaborating on a track and that he “can’t see it happening”. If you believe the gossip rag narrative, that brush-off made Taylor feel “disrespected” and set their split in motion.
This Is What You Came For has been in the #1 or #2 spot on America’s Billboard charts for the last nine weeks, and is currently #1 on Australia’s own ARIA Dance Singles Charts. Which means that you, dear reader, now have to process the fact that Taylor Swift is behind one of this year’s biggest dance tracks.
