It’s been just under two years since dubstep pioneer Benga declared that his “DJing career is finished”, as he retired from producing, touring and radio-hosting. But now, happily, the Croydon hero is back in the game, delivering news of an EP to come on 26 February, and dropping a brand new track Make Moves on SoundCloud overnight.
The new tune’s a high-tension club weapon, all hard-driving tempo and rave-y throwback acid vibes – give it a listen below. It’s the first taste from the upcoming Future Funk EP, which you can pre-order through the producer’s newly minted label Benga Beats over here.
It’s a musical change of direction and a welcome return from the pioneering producer, who opened up in a Guardian interview last year about the mental health issues that prompted his temporary retirement, and how his lifestyle of hard-partying and hectic touring led to a breakdown and a stint in hospital.
Happily, after a two year break it looks like Benga’s back in fine form, writing on SoundCloud, “I have grown a lot, and I now know what’s important: music. I’m back and I think my sound is the most ‘me’ it’s been since Diary of an Afro Warrior and I’m super excited to play it and reconnect with all of the people who have supported me. Let’s have a good year!”
Listen to Benga’s brand new banger below; he’ll also be playing his first gig in over two years at London’s Fabric on 12 February: more on that here.
